I am not going to say they don't work because they do. But...
...Paid for Antivirus products are then when real trouble strikes.
In the past 7 years I personally have been involved with and helped launch a number of Antivirus products and have seen countless people and businesses struggle with FREE Antivirus products. I have taught them more about virus and security threats and they now see the benefits of a paid for antivirus.
So, what are the benefits?
The question you need to ask about anything that is for free is "what's the catch?". At first glance there does not seem to be any "catch" but when you begin to look deeper and start to ask yourself a few questions the "catch" slowly comes into focus...
...what you will see is support, support and more support. You see, what you are paying for is dedicated expertise from people that know what they do and people that respond quickly to you as you were and are their only customer.
eScan, for example has one of the best support desks I know. Via MSN Messenger you have access to the support team and they know their stuff. It's partly due to this that eScan is growing so fast.
Symantec, or Norton as many know the product is possibly the world's best known antivirus. Many people say the free software on the market is actually better. I somehow doubt that the free software is better. Sadly, Symantec have secured a bad name in the industry and it's simply due to jealousy of other vendors. I won't slate the product, however I won't recommend it as to me personally I find it slows systems down. But , I will say it is BETTER than the free products as you get dedicated support.
So. You have a choice, free software or paid software?
Ask yourself, how valuable is your email and your computer systems? And then ask, would you trust your valuable systems to a FREE product? Think of the antivirus as an insurance policy.
