What security do I need?

Few companies have adequate security on their networks. But what the sales guys don't tell you is that often some of the free tools are actually very good despite them telling you otherwise and forcing you to buy.

Sales guys always tell you that their product is better and that you need it because it is so.
The bit they don't tell you is that pretty much all security solutions are very, very good - they would not be in business if they were not.

So, why do Antivirus sales guys tell you your product you use is not good?

The reason is simple, they need sales and having sold a few Antivirus products myself I know that your existing product is very good and may well actually do what you need it to but you don't know how to make it do it!

You need to be trained on your product and the crazy thing is that good antivirus vendors are missing out on a huge income opportunity. The sale of time and effort is pretty close to 100% profit and by them training you they get a happier customer that saves them support time and assures them of a renewal 12 months down the line - money for jam!

How do I know I need to change security products?

The question you need to ask is what problems do I currently have? Once these are asked and answered you can begin to tell if you have the right solution for your needs.

If you have been shown how to use your software then the chances of you finding a fault is less and where there is a problem it is possible you need to change.

If you haven not been shown how to use your product a simple lack of knowledge will lead you to find fault - a salesman's dream!

You may find that since you started using a product perhaps 3 years ago your needs have changed, you data levels increased and staff numbers grown. This is the ideal chance to fully re-evaluate your needs.

How to re-evaluate your needs

To re-evaluate your needs you need independent advice and unbiased opinion. Don't go to someone who knows your business inside an out go to someone who needs to ask what you do, how you do it and why. Ideally this person or company should not be affiliated to a particular product but rather have a number of solutions or be prepared to find the ideal solution.
